After reading up on how to get hold of cheap lenses, I came across a very effective and cheap solution to buying a macro, reverse the lens you are using… simple as that. I held my 18-55mm lens the wrong way round and tried to take some photos. Some of them work, others not so much, but its a really beautiful way of creating images. I am ordering a mounting ring so I can mount it without holding it on. Most of these were taken at 18mm. Anyway, check them out and try it yourself.

The grass greener is from a letterpress poster done earlier in the year, the arrows were from darrens stuff, the elephant from the small elephant toy I own and took a photo of and the white shapes at the bottom are from an illustrator thing I was working on. Darren made a comparison to the ‘North by Northwest’ Saul Bass title sequence, looking now I can see the connection.

Today, I decided to get back to the basics, as I feel it is very easy to think you already have these basics mastered. So I set about constructing an elementary design course from various sources. Starting with Jonanthon Itten’s ‘Design and Form: The Basic Course at the Bauhaus and Later’ along with Ellen Luptons ‘Graphic Design: The New Basics’, I set out trying to explore the idea of the point in space. Both books talk about the importance of this seemingly obvious element. Here are some visuals I came up with while exploring the idea of the point. As is pointed out within their books, a point is not necessarily a round dot, it can be a square or a droplet shape, as in the example below. I do feel I learned from this exercise and I will continue doing a few more of these later this evening, I also learned a little bit more about the use of illustrator. The next exercise will be on line.

Here is the final version of the illustration, number 4. I decided to keep a lot of the energy and lines in this piece to reflect the energy of wasps. The image itself is the two women from the article, as wasps, eating masses of jam on its own.

Two old-women wasps eating at a table out of giant jars of jam
Originally I only posted the image above, but based on my feedback stating that I only posted one concept, I decided to post some of the other sketches (see below). I also have provided brief descriptions incase they are too rough.
